Where it takes place
Marriages are conducted at the designated thalikettu mandapams within the temple premises rather than inside the main sanctum, with access from the East Nada side. Ceremonies are allotted in short, sequential slots — your family enters, the ritual is performed, and the mandapam is made ready for the next couple.
What the temple provides
The Devaswom arranges the priest who conducts the thali pooja and chants the mantras, along with the traditional nadaswaram and thakil melam that accompany the moment. The couple brings the thali and thali mala, manjal and kumkum.
How long it lasts
Shorter than most families expect. The thalikettu itself is a matter of minutes, and after the ceremony wedding parties are directed to pray at the Deepasthambam before exiting. The celebration proper — sadya, reception, photographs — happens in the halls outside.
Who may marry here
Guruvayur Temple conducts Hindu marriages only, and both bride and groom are required to declare their faith as part of the booking formalities. The traditional Kerala temple dress code applies to everyone entering.

Booking, Documents and Registration
The temple’s requirements are straightforward but unforgiving — an incomplete file on the day is the most common reason a family’s plans come apart. Broadly, the Devaswom expects age proof for both bride and groom, government photo identification for the couple and both sets of parents, passport photographs, a completed marriage enrolment form, and witnesses present on the day.
Slots are booked ahead through the Devaswom, and demand in season is heavy — morning timings in particular are taken quickly. Marriage halls need securing considerably earlier than the ceremony slot itself, often many months out for a peak-season date.
After the ceremony the temple issues a marriage certificate. That document is what you carry to the local registrar’s office for legal registration, along with identification, wedding photographs and witnesses. It is a separate step, and one families routinely forget in the days after the celebration — we make sure it happens.
Devaswom procedures, fees and booking windows are revised from time to time. We confirm the current requirements directly with the temple for every wedding we plan, rather than relying on what was true last season.

Dress code
Traditional Kerala temple dress is required of everyone entering, not only the couple — mundu for men, saree or set-mundu for women. It is worth telling outstation and overseas relatives well in advance, since it catches guests out every season.
Food near the temple
Non-vegetarian food is prohibited within the temple’s surrounding area. This shapes your catering and any pre- or post-wedding meals you plan nearby, and is best factored in from the start rather than discovered late.
Getting there
Guruvayoor sits in Thrissur district, roughly 90 kilometres from Cochin International Airport and about 29 from Thrissur town. For NRI families arriving from the Gulf, that transfer is a planning item in itself when a morning muhurtham means leaving before dawn.
